The Wonderful Wilsoni!

Asutralophyllia Wilsoni are an incredible coral that come in an incredible range of rainbows and blues! While they may seem intimidating dueto their rarity, they are typically very temperamental. They prefer low light around 75 PAR, and low flow. They also like to be fed and should be fed two to three times per week in order to maintain their fluffy flesh. They are in their own genus but are similar to their former genus of. The Wilsoni is a beautiful and rare coral that is very similar to Scolymia corals in that they grow slowly and LOVE to be fed.

Wilsoni corals are an LPS coral with a stony skeleton, because of this they require calcium at levels around 380-480 ppm, alkalinity at 7-12 DKH, and magnesium from 1200-1400 ppm. Water changes should be performed regularly in order to maintain nitrate and phosphate levels under 20 ppm and .05 ppm.

One thing to be cautious about is that some Wilsonis are from cold waters that are roughly 70-72 degrees and require slow acclimation in order to be maintained in the typical reef aquarium that operates at 76-78 degrees Fahrenheit.  However once acclimated they typically do well in this warmer water. Overall Wilsoni’s can be kept with little effort in a well maintained reef tank as long as you know what you are doing when it comes to feeding and light requirements that are different from most corals.
